First, A Little Bit More About Me

Hey there! I’m Derek, you might know me as the Staff Writer here at IRW. I wanted to take a minute to let you get to know me a little better. So, let me share a piece of my heart with you—I’m a high school dropout. It’s true, life hasn’t always been a smooth ride, and I’ve stumbled on my fair share of mistakes. But you know what? Those very experiences taught me the true value of learning, and they ignited a fire within me that yearned to explore and understand the world around me. It was like a beacon of light illuminating my path toward growth and transformation. So, with determination blazing in my heart, I made a decision that changed my life—I took charge of my education, vowing to never stop learning, and embarked on a soul-stirring journey of knowledge like no other.

As I delved into the vast ocean of wisdom, my thirst for understanding only grew. I dipped my toes into the waters of psychology, sociology, and the intricate workings of human nature. I dived headfirst into the realm of salesmanship, unlocking the secrets of effective communication and building meaningful connections with others. My journey led me to explore the fascinating world of electronics and computer programming, where I unraveled the magic behind the technology that shapes our lives.

But it didn’t stop there. My hunger for knowledge was insatiable, and I thirsted for more. I ventured into the realms of business and marketing, learning the art of strategy and innovation. I explored topics that touched my soul—self-improvement, emotional well-being, and personal development—that became my guiding stars on this path of growth.

But let me tell you, it hasn’t been a solitary expedition. My heart is woven with threads of technology, and I’ve held various roles—from a passionate software developer, crafting lines of code that bring ideas to life, to being the beacon of technical support, guiding others toward digital solutions. I’ve been immersed in the world of web hosting, curating spaces for others to share their stories and aspirations. And oh, let’s not forget the gaming realm, where I’ve savored the joy of virtual adventures and connected with people worldwide.

A little secret—I’m a bit of a sarcastic soul, with a flair for humor and a love for laughter. A classical Leo persona, wearing my passions on my sleeve. And in this beautiful mosaic of experiences, there’s one thing that remained constant—a deep-seated desire to learn, to grow, and to embrace every twist and turn of this rollercoaster ride called life.

Now, here we are, you and I, connected by the threads of shared experiences and dreams. As we embark on this journey together, let me tell you, it’s not just about me—it’s about you too. It’s about creating a sanctuary of emotional growth, where hearts can connect and souls can flourish. So, my friend, let’s dive into the depths of knowledge and inspiration, holding hands as we explore the infinite riches within. Together, we’ll uncover the treasures that lie within your soul, and together, we’ll celebrate the wondrous journey of transformation that awaits us. Welcome to this soulful odyssey—I’m thrilled you’re here!

Why I Absolutely Love Reading 50+ Books per Year

As I already stated I was a High School Dropout. Even though I eventually decide to get a GED and go off to college, there were a few key lessons that I had learned at that young age (we’ll discuss those more in the future). During my time of high school years, I often was that guy who everyone knew of, but rarely saw in class. In fact, I believe one year I had more than half a year of absences to my credit. Oddly I was often in school just in time to take the quizzes and exams. This caused a big to-do often because the teachers had to assume I was cheating on those tests, which often led to me retaking those tests “under supervision”. I could get high grades in just about any subject I chose to “pay attention to”, I just truly feel out of place taking the “slow route” of studying and attending classes.

Much of this actually centered on the fact that I love to read. I read just about everything I can get my hands on these days. Everything from finance to history, to psychology, electronics, and even classical literature. I never know exactly which books I will read next, and I absorb the material like a sponge.

Even upon entering college I often found myself “Helping others to study” simply because I often read the books faster, outlined the key topics and highlighted my books. I often only retained those key pieces of information and let go of extraneous details that muddied the waters of what would be on the tests.

Below is a little bit about why I read so much,

Embracing the World of Imagination

It is often said that the “book was better than the movie”. This is often because the book forces our minds to actively create the picture in our heads. When a movie version comes out, we get to see the “director’s vision” of those same details. How many times have you carefully watch a movie to see if the color purple on a character’s clothing was the exact same shade you would have chosen? You likely haven’t. This is because seeing things with our eyes is not the same as us reading those words and having to create that image inside of our minds. Magicians play tricks on our eyes, and as any movie youtube will show you there are tons of “hidden” easter eggs in almost every movie ever made.

The Gateway to Infinite Realms

Books, my friend, are my portal to boundless worlds. From the magical escapades of wizardry to exploring uncharted planets, I can’t get enough of the thrill and adventure that books bring. Being a bit of a dreamer, I love how they let me lose myself in the wildest of fantasies. When I open a book, it’s like stepping into an alternate reality, where anything is possible. As the pages come alive, I become one with the characters, feeling their emotions, and experiencing their triumphs and heartaches as if they were my own.

Characters Become My Besties

Oh, you won’t believe the friends I’ve made! Now, I’m not talking about real people (though I’ve got plenty of those too). I’m talking about the characters in books. Those guys are my true companions, and I laugh, cry, and cheer for them like they’re right here with me. They teach me life lessons that no fancy degree can match. When I met Atticus Finch in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” I learned the power of compassion and standing up for what’s right. And let me tell you about Elizabeth Bennet from “Pride and Prejudice”—she taught me the importance of staying true to myself and not letting society define my worth. These characters have become a part of me, shaping my values and influencing the person I aspire to be.

Seeking Knowledge and Growth

The more you read, the more likely you will come across one of my favorite quotes.

“Rich people have small TVs and big libraries, and poor people have small libraries and big TVs.”

― Zig Ziglar

I took this to heart many years ago. Even Jom Rohn has done numerous discussions on this topic. Including such conversations as “keeping journals, and passing those journals on to one’s heirs can become one of the greatest gifts you could leave behind once you leave this world”.

Learning for the Fun of It

Do you know what keeps me going? The sheer joy of learning! I’ve been to college, and studied all sorts of stuff—psychology, sociology, human nature, salesmanship, electronics, computer programming, business, marketing—you name it. And you know what? I still can’t get enough of it! Each book I pick up is an opportunity to delve into a new subject, gain fresh insights, and expand my intellectual horizons. Learning isn’t just a means to an end for me; it’s a lifelong adventure that I’m eager to embark on every single day.

Unleashing My Inner Techie

Oh, here’s a fun fact about me—I’m a total technophile! I’ve worked in software development, technical support, web hosting, gaming—you get the idea. Books not only quench my thirst for knowledge but also keep me up-to-date in the ever-evolving world of technology. Whether it’s exploring the potential of artificial intelligence in sci-fi novels or diving into the history of computing, books feed my fascination with all things tech. They provide me with the insights and know-how to thrive in this digital age while never forgetting the wonder of analog experiences.

The Hunger for Growth

I’ve got this insatiable hunger for growth, and books fuel that hunger. They challenge me, push me to think differently, and broaden my horizons. Who would’ve thought a high school dropout like me could be so hungry for knowledge, huh? Each book is like a stepping stone on the path of self-improvement. When I read about the successes and struggles of others, it inspires me to overcome my own obstacles and reach for the stars. This quest for growth has become an integral part of who I am, driving me to keep learning and evolving as a person.

Unwinding and Relieving Stress

Stree is a leading cause of health problems in the United States. Imagine for a moment all it took was for you to sit back in a chair, grab a book, enjoy yourself for 30 minutes, and let the day unwind. Getting lost in the worlds that have been created, peering deep into the imagination of others’ thoughts. What is stopping you from taking time for yourself?

Escaping the Chaos

Life can get chaotic, right? But you know what’s my secret escape? Books! When everything’s too overwhelming, I can just dive into a good read and find tranquility amidst the chaos. It’s like pressing the pause button on life’s endless demands and retreating into a realm where time slows down. The act of reading is a form of self-care for me, a way to recharge my emotional batteries and regain a sense of balance. The more I lose myself in words, the more I find myself, and it’s a beautiful journey of self-discovery.

Taking a Break from Screens

You see, as much as I love technology, it’s essential to take a break from screens now and then. And what better way to do that than curling up with a good old-fashioned book? It’s like a digital detox, and trust me, it works wonders. The tangible feel of the pages, the faint scent of ink, and the rustling sound as I turn them—it’s a sensory experience that transports me to a simpler time. By disconnecting from the virtual world and immersing myself in the printed word, I find solace and rekindle my appreciation for the little joys in life.

Connecting with Others

Now that you have seen “into the minds of others”, how does it feel to know that you often share a level of intimacy with the author? Have you read a book that made you cry? One that made you laugh? Or one that even made you feel disgusted? Those authors have toiled for many nights in order to convey exactly the right emotional response to the reader. A deep emotional connection occurs because you often share those same thoughts and feelings that resonate with the author’s words. Words have power.

Bonding Over Books

Now, I may be a bit sarcastic at times, but one thing’s for sure—I love bonding with like-minded individuals over books. Being part of a book club or sharing book recommendations with friends creates connections that go beyond the pages. When we discuss our favorite reads, it’s like a meeting of souls, where we discover shared passions and insights. These interactions go far beyond the realm of books; they foster genuine relationships, understanding, and a sense of belonging.

Sharing the Love

Do you know what’s better than finding a fantastic book? Sharing it with someone else! When I stumble upon a gem, I can’t wait to spread the joy to my friends and family. Trust me; it’s the best feeling ever! Recommending a book is like offering a piece of my heart, hoping that others will cherish it as much as I do. And when they come back with excitement in their eyes, telling me how much they loved the story, it’s like a tiny victory that warms my soul.

Not Just Reading, But Listening Too

Over the course of many years of reading, one topic I have continually gravitated towards has been the “self-help, success, and leadership” genres of books. Among these books are the collective works of Neville Goddard, Tony Robbins, Jim Rohn, Charley Stanley, John Maxwell, Dale Carnegie, and so many more that I could list in one go.

In truth though there are way too many to just simply read them all the old-fashioned way. This often confuses people when I tell them I no longer watch television, as I am inundated with “What do you do for fun?”… But instead I am often found with audiobooks running almost full time when possible. I choose any number of books to play softly while I sleep even. This might seem counter-intuitive to some, but the sounds are often soothing enough to fall asleep to as well as I almost always wake up to some key point that resonates with me. Keeping a journal nearby allows me to capture those intuitive insights and store them away for future reference.

Conclusion

In conclusion, reading 50 books per year isn’t just a challenge; it’s a way of life for me. From my high school dropout days to becoming a tech-savvy explorer of knowledge, books have been my steadfast companions. They let me dream, they let me grow, and they let me connect with a world of like-minded bookworms like you. So, let’s keep turning those pages and discovering the magic of books together.

FAQs

  1. How do you find time to read 50 books per year with such a busy life? Ah, the magic lies in making time for the things you love! I squeeze in reading whenever I can—during lunch breaks, on public transport, and even before bedtime. It’s all about prioritizing the things that bring me joy and fulfillment.
  2. What genres do you enjoy the most? Oh, I’m quite the eclectic reader! But if I had to pick, I’d say I lean toward self-help, psychology, leadership, and success.
  3. How to afford so many books? If you cannot afford to buy new books, check out local GoodWhill chapters. They often sell books for between $2-3 each. This makes it affordable to buy tons of great books at super prices. Imagine getting “Think and Grow Rish” for $2.
  4. What tips can you suggest for aspiring readers? One of the first things I did was to read a book about “speed reading”, as anytime you can increase the speed at which you read this means you can finish quicker. Additionally, the next thing I read was a book on “improving memory retention”. Again, reading fast and retention of what you read will make a major difference. Work on comprehension skills. The more words you know and understand will help to avoid confusion for tougher topics.
  5. Where do you read the most? I love to read at home. Often while sitting in a chair. But reading outside under a bit of shade is one of the most relaxing places to read. Any place too comfortable runs the risk of nodding off, depending on the topic being read.
