One of My Personal Stories:

I would like to share a key facet of one aspect of what makes me who I am. I have a firm belief that we should always “take things with a grain of salt”. By this, I mean that we should always seek enough factual information about anything we question so that we can make informed, educated decisions. This practice is often considered “critical thinking”. I bring this up for two reasons, one, because the Q&A is all about “how we think”, and two, to show that we are all caught wherever our mind keeps us.

Here are few things that have happened to me that I hope will put this point forward.

Years ago I was having tons of shoulder pain. That pain was excruciating, and the doctors suggested an MRI. during the following weeks after a doctor’s visit, the pain continued to get worse. The Doctor was more than willing to “do exploratory surgery” in order to find the problem. To my surprise, my work chair broke and I had to get a new one. The new one I had received did not have arms rests on the sides. This meant I had to adjust my sitting position. Amazingly, a few days went by and my shoulder stopped hurting. It became clear that the process of “leaning” onto my elbow against the chair armrest was causing shoulder pain. The main key point I learned here, was not to “not trust a doctor”. but was more along the line of “The doctor treats the symptoms, and is not always aware of the cause”.

This became a more apparent lesson years later when I was constantly “feeling” old and decrepit. Turns out I was constantly telling myself that is “Exactly” how I felt. I would wake up sore, feel tired, and I would constantly bombard myself with the dreaded “I feel old”, or “I am so tired”, and a plethora of other negative thoughts. It wasn’t until my daughter began giving me a hard time about it, bringing my focused attention to my own actions, that I was aware that I was subconsciously causing myself this condition. It took a child to remind me of something I already knew, and that was that “if I kept telling myself that I felt a certain way”, well then I was right.

This is why “The Little Engine That Could” is such a valuable children’s book. That one sentence of “I Think I Can”. rings truer than you might want to believe. It highlights the concept of “If you believe you can, you can”, and conversely, if you believe “you can’t, you can’t”.
